Goran Maric, a Nasher Sculpture Artist Grant Recipient, is a multidisciplinary printmaker, artist, and a visual storyteller. Drawing on his life experiences deeply affected by war in his native Bosnia, the multifaceted statements he makes through his work reveal the hope of the individuals engulfed in wartime destitution and lives afterward. The present work can be explained as a two-way road exploring personal experiences, memories he uses as a starting point of a never ending search and understanding of a human hope in coping with hardship of lives in war and how certain cultural parameters lose its cherished values celebrated during periods of peaceful times.
Another aspect, a second road taken, of his work questions what is an identity and how it has been constructed with all its values and vices from our early ages on, which as such makes us do things, he believes, we would never do otherwise. What does happen with these values if the society upon which those very same values had been built does not exist anymore. Goran had been involved in never ending process of defining, constructing, deconstructing his identity shattered after the civil war that toppled former Yugoslavia upon which his identity had been constructed.
Not being able to reject his identity, he has decided, ever since dissolution of Yugoslavia, to accept a life of a forever wanderer, the life of an immigrant, understanding that being an immigrant is the life of ever and forever being a foreigner no matter what. Doing so he found his life again to be lived in a country that is no longer, NOLONGERLAND…
